Rescuing Memories: Looking at the importance of backing up your data to the cloud.
In today’s ever changing world, climate among other things is wreaking havoc. It’s causing floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and fires; destroying businesses, homes and data.
With most, if not all, important information is kept on our PCs. If we are hit with any of these disasters, we could lose everything.
And for those who keep paper records, real photo albums and CDs/DVDs — they can be easily destroyed. Having a backup can prevent this loss and the grief that comes with it.
Having a backup is great, but keep it offsite. In many cases, people have an initial backup plan. They go out and purchase an external hard drive and copy everything to it. However, it then remains sitting on their desk, next to the PC.
A big mistake is not having it offsite where the disaster can’t reach both the PC and external hard drive at the same time.
With backups, you want to “set it and forget it”. Backups must be easy and automatic. If we are forced to physically backup things periodically, we’re either going to forget or find it to be such a hassle that we won’t do it anymore.
With cloud storage you set it to automatically backup any data saved to a file folder. Better yet, you are also able to go back and recover previous versions of files.
Not only do you need one backup, it’s important to have more. With cloud storage, your PC is linked to the cloud which can also be linked to other devices, like a work PC, so you have a backup of a backup. This is helpful in cases of disaster; many times you will not have internet connection and are not able to access the cloud but can get the files saved from that other device
What’s on your PC is your business. The cloud provider must not be able to look at your data. Look for strict privacy policies and service agreements.
Having a cloud storage account and a backup plan is all about keeping your data and digital memories safe.
